Newsletter July '09

Dear Supporter,

Seven months ago, we opened the doors to BaBa Blankets & Crafts here in New Orleans. This month, I was honored to be awarded
Top Female Achiever by New Orleans Magazine.

This recognition reminds me that for whatever achievement seen in me, I am but one reflection of the inspiring progress made by all of the women who have joined hands in this work. BaBa Blankets are a communal achievement. This is the product of women working together to create more fulfilling lives for themselves and for their families, in conjunction with a global community intent on supporting their dreams.

It truly humbles me to represent the progress of such courageous women, our collective growth and the transforming powers of the community that we have created together. I thank all of you for helping to bring us this far, New Orleans Magazine for this special
honor, and the people of New Orleans for embracing BaBa Blankets with so much heart and soul.

All the very best,

Aminata

SISTA SCHOLAR PROGRAM
This past spring, we raised over $8,000 for our Stay-In-School Tuition Assistance (SISTA) Program. Our SISTA Scholar Program is dedicated to giving young women in rural Ghana the support they need to complete their high school education. On March 25th, 10 of our Scholars received much needed school supplies, fee payments, and the news that their full-tuition for next year has been put aside for them.

This coming fall, we will be selecting an additional 15 girls who come from extremely rural communities and would otherwise not be able to continue their education. Thanks to your goodwill and
generous contributions, 25 young scholars will stay in school with peace of mind, knowing that they have vital support to fully step into their dream of higher education. You are truly making a difference in the lives of these young women, and we thank you so very much again for all of your support and well wishes. You are helping us to make one very important dream come true for our young 'sistas' and we believe that the gift of empowerment will mutually uplift and enrich all of our worlds.

Very special thanks for the generous support of the Jeanie C. Linders Fund , Susan Hester & Lee Stephenson for enabling us to miraculously multiply the number of girls in our program.

Please stay tuned for more updates on our SISTA Scholars throughout the year.
COME JOURNEY TO GHANA, WEST AFRICA - TAKE A SISTA VOYAGE OF THE HEART
We are in the preliminary stages of planning an all women’s journey to Ghana. This voyage will focus on exploring the lives of women and girls throughout various regions of Ghana, connecting with each other in a variety of settings, and cross-cultural sharing of our diverse experiences as women in Africa & America.
The tour will include excursions into the country’s major historical places, visits to a variety of women’scooperatives, off-the-beaten path beaches & conservation retreats, and overnight rural village stays.

The culmination of the journey will be for each woman to hand-carry sponsorship donations & supplies to individual girl students in the northern region of Ghana. Each traveler will be matched with one girl, and may carry multiple donations to sponsor more girls on behalf of other non-traveling supporters.

The intention of this journey is for all women traveling to experience a heart-centered connection with and a deeper understanding of African women, as well as new life-long bonds with each other. There will be ongoing sharing & debriefing sessions throughout the journey to discuss experiences and to help facilitate both inner & outer learnings.

Our goal is to provide a 10-14 day journey in the late summer/fall of 2010 (to meet our incoming SISTA Scholars girls at the beginning of the school year). We encourage mother-daughter & auntie-niece pairs, best friends, partners, sisters and solo women travelers alike!

If you are interested in being a part of this experience, please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and stay tuned for more details. We look forward to creating this transformative voyage of the heart with you!
NEW ORLEANS NEWCOMERS
One of the greatest advantages of opening our store in New Orleans has been the ability to grow our U.S. based support team.

We recently welcomed both Lindsay Nash & Katrina Scott as associates in our store.

Lindsay is a recent Tulane graduate with degrees in Women’s Studies & Int’l Development. She also studied in Ghana as an undergrad while interning at the Alliance for African Women Initiative in Accra.

Katrina is a Ph.D. candidate of Cultural Anthropology. She joins us here while researching the culture of New Orleans media for her dissertation and lending us her support in public, customer & media relations.

Please look out for much more from both Lindsay & Katrina!
